Know Your Position: Finding the Job That Fits You

Know Your Position Finding the Job That Fits You

Every successful football team has one thing in common. Every player knows their position. A striker would not thrive at centre back, and a goalkeeper would not last long up front, because the game asks something different of each role. The same is true at work. Knowing your position, what you are genuinely good at and where you perform best shapes how satisfied you feel in your job.

In logistics and transport, that idea matters more than people often realise. The sector covers a wide range of roles, from driving to warehousing to supervisory positions, and the right fit looks different for everyone.

Why you should know your position in logistics

The UK logistics sector is under real pressure right now. It contributes £170 billion to the economy and employs up to 2.7 million workers. It also carries the second-highest sickness absence rate of any UK industry, and 39% of staff report job insecurity, the highest of any sector. Around half of long-haul HGV drivers are now over 50, and the industry expects 350,000 transport workers to retire by 2030.

People who end up in roles that do not suit them are more likely to burn out or leave the industry altogether. Working out where you fit best early on really does help.

Know your strengths before you choose your role

Some people are built for the open road. They like their own space, enjoy the routine of a route, and find satisfaction in getting a job done independently. Others prefer the structure of a warehouse, working as part of a team with clear daily tasks and the chance to build relationships with colleagues. Neither is better than the other; they are simply different positions on the same pitch.

If long hours alone on the road have started to wear on you, a warehouse-based role might suit you better at this stage. Equally, if you currently work in a warehouse and like the idea of more independence, moving into driving could be a natural next step.

Know your position before you outgrow it

In football, managers move players once they see more in them than their current role allows. The same applies at work. If you have done the same role for years and know it inside out, that might be a sign you are ready for a supervisory or team leader position.

Admitting that to yourself is not always easy, and staying put can feel safer. But a role that no longer challenges you can be just as unsatisfying as being in the wrong one altogether.

Tell your recruiter what you are looking for

A good recruiter wants to put you in the position where you will perform best, not just fill a vacancy. That only works if you are upfront about what you are looking for. If you want flexible shifts, a particular type of vehicle, or progression opportunities, say so, because the clearer you are, the better the match will be.

If you are ready to find your position, get in touch with your local branch. Whether you are behind the wheel, on the warehouse floor, or ready to step into management, finding the right position is what makes a career genuinely sustainable, not just for this season, but for the long run.
